Bill Murray, Jan Vogler & Friends to Join 2018 Glimmerglass Festival

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (August 28, 2017) - The Glimmerglass Festival will present Bill Murray, Jan Vogler and Friends in New Worlds, a program with Murray singing and reading, with chamber music led by Jan Vogler, on Tuesday, July 24, 2018.

Murray is well known for his place in American pop culture as an actor, comedian and writer. His performances in the films Groundhog Day, Lost in Translation, The Royal Tenenbaums, Ghostbusters, as well as on the cast of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, are just some of his engagements that resonate with audiences today. The recipient of the 2016 Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for Humor, Murray famously parodied singers on Saturday Night Live, but ventures into new territory with his New World appearances. Vogler is an award-winning classical cellist who regularly premieres new works; his ensemble brings selections such as Bernstein’s “I Feel Pretty” to this new chamber piece. Vogler is Artistic Director of the Moritzburg Festival and Intendant of the Dresden Music Festival.

New Worlds stems from Murray and Vogler’s curiosity in each other’s artistic worlds, and mixes the two together. The performance communicates the bridges artists have built between America and Europe, and mixes readings and performances of works by Twain, Hemingway, Whitman, Cooper, Bernstein, Gershwin and Foster, among others.

Tickets for the performance will start at $75 and are currently available exclusively to subscribers to the 2018 Glimmerglass Festival. New subscriptions go on sale September 26, 2018, and single tickets go on sale to the general public on January 29, 2018.

The 2018 Glimmerglass Festival will feature performances of Bernstein’s West Side Story, Janá?ek’s The Cunning Little Vixen, Rossini’s The Barber of Seville and Puts’ Silent Night. The Festival will also offer performances of Bernstein’s one?act Trouble in Tahiti, as well as a conversation with Leonard Bernstein’s daughter, writer and broadcaster Jamie Bernstein. Thomas Hampson will premiere a one-man show, and Margaret Atwood, author of The Handmaid’s Tale, will make her debut Glimmerglass appearance offering a wide?ranging talk. Additionally, Eric Owens will present a concert honoring veterans entitled Over There, and the youth opera Odyssey by Ben Moore and Kelley Rourke will make a return.
