Many visitors know Cooperstown, N.Y., best as a summer vacation destination, but there's also something so special about the other seasons.

Winter -- with snow or no white stuff -- has an equally special feeling as fallen leaves from a past autumn allow for more unobstructed views of Main Street in Cooperstown. You can better see the colorful, historic buildings and appealing storefront signs while fewer vacationers in town equates to a more peaceful feeling, less pedestrian congestion and the wonderful sounds of virtual silence, at times. The chill in the air feels refreshing and many of the residents and store owners embrace the chance to spend more time with visitors.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum remains open and even though it receives a surprisingly high number of visitors in the off season, it feels more like you have the place to yourself. The indoor Cooperstown Farmers Market provides a warm and inviting scene on Saturdays with locals selling produce, meats, cheeses, clothing, arts and crafts and other goods. Christmas time brings about holiday music playing in the street, Santa and Mrs. Claus arriving at their charming house in the heart of the village, homes and businesses all decked out in Christmas design, and down the road, hundreds of luminaries lighting the scene at the Candlelight Evening celebration at The Farmers' Museum.

Although a blanket of snow lends a Currier and Ives look to Main Street,  it is also nice to have no snow -- and no frigid temperatures -- as this type of winter day validates Cooperstown as one of the best walking towns in the northeast. Too much snow can impede that joy.

Cooperstown might be a vacation spot, but ultimately it is an authentic small town, at heart. Times of the year like winter bring out the best opportunity to experience that Upstate New York magic.
