Editor's note and testimonial: As tourists who visit Cooperstown, N.Y., several times a year, we value the presence of Bassett Healthcare, a state-of-the-art facility not typically found in rural areas. With a big campus and a thoroughly professional staff, they helped us immensely when health problems affected our family. Being on vacation and getting sick is not exactly joyful, but Bassett's fine staff made us feel welcome, treated us promptly, and diagnosed us accurately -- the way we typically experience in our native Boston, Mass., which is renowned for its medical institutions. It is comforting to know that a rural hospital's commitment to excellence exists in our favorite vacation destination, the great Village of Cooperstown.

The facility is clean, has comfortable waiting rooms, and also a marvelous view of the Susquehanna River! If it wasn't a hospital, this would be a great location for a very, very large hotel. But, fortunately, Cooperstown does have Bassett Healthcare. We are most grateful, as tourists, of its vital presence.

The Bassett Healthcare Mission

Bassett Healthcare and affiliates is a system of physicians, providers, hospitals and community health centers in eight counties, covering 5,000 square miles. The Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital (doing business as Bassett Healthcare), the foundation for this network, is a 180-bed, acute care inpatient teaching facility in Cooperstown. The hospital maintains a strong academic program and rich tradition as a center for learning through its affiliation with Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. The Bassett Clinic is located on the same campus as the hospital and provides outpatient primary and specialty care. Additionally, Bassett offers 24-hour emergency and trauma care, comprehensive cancer care and heart care, dialysis, and most medical and surgical specialties in Cooperstown. The Bassett Research Institute conducts programs in basic science, clinical science, and population and public health studies. Around the region, the network provides primary, preventive, and outpatient care at 25 health centers and operates 13 school-based health centers. In addition to The Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, acute inpatient care is provided at affiliated sites: O'Connor Hospital in Delhi, Cobleskill Regional Hospital, and Little Falls Hospital. Around the clock emergency care is provided at another Bassett affiliate, Tri-Town Regional Hospital in Sidney. Outpatient specialty care is available throughout the region with Bassett specialists seeing patients at many of the health centers and Bassett-affiliated sites.
